business. Espoo Awards 2022: An Overview

The great international outdoor event, the Espoo Show in Munich, has released the 2022-2023 vintage of its prestigious Espoo Awards, the prize for the most innovative products. Although this 2022 edition was devoid of major ski brands, there was plenty to do A brief overview with 17 products out of 55 awarded is not complete!

The brand’s true bestseller, the Cosmos ski touring boots, has been redesigned in a re-sourced version. They offer similar functionality but with 50% eco-responsible, recycled or natural materials. 92% of the plastic parts are made from Paybox Rnew, an organic material derived from castor oil from India and processed in France. The strap is made entirely of recycled materials and the liner is also largely made of recycled materials.
The shoes are available in fall 2023 for 630 euros.

Patagonia Alpine Suit

Dedicated to climbers, this combination uses the all-new Gore-Tex EPE membrane in preview. It was developed in conjunction with Patagonia and its eco-responsibility requirements. It’s PFC-free, chemical-free, and certified by using BlueSign recycled polyester and nylon.
From October 2023 this suite will cost €1,000.

Made by the Haute-Savoie brand Samaya, this tent is a model designed for climbers looking for light (655 grams), minimal and very protective shelter. The Radical 1 is a 4-season tent that takes up only 2 liters of space when folded. It is made of a two-layer bio-sourced Dyneema membrane for walls and floors with 20,000 mm waterproofing and a record breathability of 40,000 g/m²/24h. Poles are made of carbon. It is already available for 1,500 €

MILLET PIERRA MENT EVO

This backpack for ski mountaineers has a “hard” pocket dedicated to crampons. An original solution to protect the rest of the tools in the bag and save time when taking them out or putting them away. If needed, the pocket is removable. The Pierra Ment Evo Backpack will be available in October 2023 for €250.

These boots are specially made for expeditions in high altitude or glacial terrain. Therm-IC technology, developed here with Himalaya Nirmal Purzia (Nims Dai), completes the know-how of Italian shoemaker Scarpa. The thermal system prevents leg and lower leg muscle stiffness to maintain performance in the most extreme conditions. The eco-responsible aspect cannot be overstated by using the Primaloft Gold insulating layer. These boots will be available in October 2023 for €1,300.

Ultimatefit Liner FIS Liner

Designed for competitive alpine skiers, these liners developed in Haute-Savoy feature interesting technology at the malleolus where inserts can be placed to improve comfort and precision. They have pockets for injecting foam made of cork on the tongue and around the heel. The toe box is thermally insulated with wool to retain warmth. A liner is designed like a glove, around the foot and not around the shoe shell. The model is already available at a price of 375 €

Swiss brand On Running presents this XXL version of its flagship technology, Cloud Tech. It offers exceptional cushioning but good relaunch thanks to the addition of an injected polypropylene “speedboard” plate between the outsole and midsole to increase relaunch performance. A model available from this year for 170 €

This snowboard made by Double Deck has an original construction with a part in the form of a shock absorbing blade where the bindings are installed on the board in contact with the snow. This solution makes cornering easier for beginners and more efficient for experienced riders as it eases board distortion when edging. This technology is offered in different models (Freeride, Freestyle, Pro and Beginner) and different sizes from September 2023 at a price of 900 euros.

The small Finnish brand Pusu presents its Loska Spinnova model, which takes its name from a textile fiber made from recycled materials (wood, leather, food, textiles) and replaces the glass and carbon fibers that are often used to make skis without chemical treatment. It thus complements a certified original wood core. Spinova fiber, whose use is known in the textile industry, is a first for the ski industry!
The skis are already available in three sizes for €1,300.

The ski touring bindings are easy to use, they are ultralight with ski stoppers, a DYN release adjustment from 6 to 10, two climbing wedges… and above all 148 grams on the scale!

Scott offers this eco-responsible version of its Superguide 95 Freerando model. The overall composition of the ski is from natural sources and/or recycled materials. Manufacturing is done in Europe (Austria) where most of the materials come from.

The Jura brand offers a mask with a curtain that moves forward to optimize ventilation. An evolution of the aerospace model that had the same principle, the Light Ear Mask comes with new hinges with magnets to ease use and increase durability. It has the first photochromic lenses from UV0 protection (night) to UV4 protection (high mountains). An OTG version (for prescription glasses wearers) has also been developed.
The mask will be available in autumn 2023 for prices starting at 230 euros.

A driver is an alpine ski helmet that includes a visor, somewhat like a visor but with the convenience of a visor (for those wearing glasses). It is available in several models including the top of the range which incorporates Boa wheel tightening as well as Mips technology which reduces the impact of side impacts.
Available from this fall, from 240 to 350 €.

These ice screws for ice climbing or mountaineering are the lightest on the market with a low weight of 58 grams for the 10 cm long model and 84 grams for the 22 cm model (available in five different lengths). The Aero Lite has a construction combining stainless steel with tips and aluminum.

Through a dedicated application, this scanner presents data that is understandable to everyone and offers objective monitoring.

Thanks to the 50/50 technology, this down jacket provides warmth, thermoregulation, lightness and breathability. It consists of down-filled “tubes” interspersed with uninsulated spaces for air circulation inside the jacket. Using a synthetic down keeps its warmth despite the humidity. The outer membrane protects against the elements but provides high breathability. One part is specially designed for ski tourers who need warmth as well as breathability.
Available from this fall 2022 for €380.
